Both Sides of the Bars

Language shapes how people experience the criminal legal system and how the public understands it. The words we choose influence perception and drive action, often determining whether we reinforce stigma or support change. When we stop using language that portrays the system as fair and labels people in dehumanizing ways, we make room for language that reflects accuracy, dignity, and truth. Using terms like “criminal-legal system” and “justice-impacted” helps people see the system for what it is and recognize the humanity and potential of those affected by it. This episode looks at how intentional language can shift narratives, challenge harmful assumptions, and support movements for real justice. By questioning the words we use, we take a meaningful first step toward building communities rooted in honesty, respect, and possibility. Our guest is Andre Ward, the executive director at the John Jay College Institute for Justice and Opportunity.
